There is a Southern saying that dictates eating habits in the Southern United States' New Year's: "Eat poor on New Year's, eat fat the rest of the year." A traditional Southern New Year's meal includes ham, corn bread, black-eyed peas and collard greens. Both black-eyed peas and collard greens are especially lucky additions to the dinner table. Black-eyed peas are thought to bring wealth because they look like little coins, in addition to the fact that they swell when cooked -- a sure sign of prosperity. Collard greens are lucky because they are green, like greenbacks -- money!
So be sure and eat your black-eyed peas today! As matter of fact my momma is in the kitchen making cornbread and fried cabbage. Can you say "YUMMO"!!!
Happy New Year everyone!!

This is where the California girl comes out in me ... because I can't stand the thought of black-eyed peas or greens. Or cornbread for that matter. BUT, can Dave come to your house for dinner??
It sounds so good to me Becky. Enjoy your day and take some pictures to share with us.
I LOVE cornbread and black-eyed peas. Unfortunately, I am a loner in this gastric delight! How do you make a pot of beans and cornbread for one?? Wish we had a Luby's Cafeteria close by...yum!
Enjoy you feast! Happy New Year!
I had no idea there is a traditional meal for New Years! I think collard greens are amazing! I grew up in Utah and never had them before. Michael introduced them to me and now every time I go to Fort Meyers I MUST buy them at the market in the airport! They are fantastic!
I made lunch today for my Momma and Grandmother. Black eyed peas wasn't on the menu, so they brought them! My Grandmother says you have to at least eat one. :)
Hi Becky, I ate it all but the cornbread and collards! Maybe that will be enough! LOL! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and many blessings in the New Year! ~hugs, Rhonda :)
Well we had all that you mentioned for dinner and it was delish! I know your dinner was yummy as well.
My hubby wants to know if we just listen to song by the "black eyed peas" if that counts? HAPPY NEW YEAR
We ate ours and it was yummy...of course tomorrow it's back on the healthy eating plan but for the last couple of weeks we've enjoyed ourselves immensely where food is concerned. Thanks for stopping by my blog today...I'm always SO excited to find another southern gal out in blogland!
Lucky me! I found your blog today. I ate my black-eyed peas & collards today. I forgot to open the front door at midnight. . .darn it. Happy New Years!
Unfortunately, none of that stuff is on my list of deliciousness. I honestly don't know if I could do any of those without a tad of gagging going on! But..I'm thinking this is going to be a great year, anyway!
Hope yours is amazing!
That is exactly what MiMi's family had for New Years and I must say it was pretty delish! I'm hoping that the black-eyed peas and greens bring the wealth they are supposed to! lol
Becky, I have enjoyed getting to know you over this past year. We just seem to have a "connection" with our girls and our grands. I always enjoy reading your blog and hope that one day we can still meet in Raleigh for a Cheerwine! (-;
Praying God's blessings on you and your family in 2009!
